Portraits in Pride is a photographic
series illuminating the lives of Queer women in South Florida. Six 3"
x 3" square images form a narrative about a symbol of pride in
their identity. These symbols varied from material objects to geographic
locations. Through the photographs and the women’s stories, we
are able to broaden the scope of vision associated with the identity
of Queer women.
Images in Portraits in Pride are intimate works which focus
on the women and their personal narratives. Since each woman has a different
experience and symbol of pride, attention to details, such as a location
specificity, was of the utmost importance. During the process of the
photo shoot, the women and I discussed their symbol, why it held value
and how it has shaped their lives. Accompanying each series is a brief
description of the woman’s symbol, and their responses to the
informal interview. Overall, through the images and stories, the women
involved in the project help create new portraits of what it means to
be a Queer woman living in South Florida.
This series was exhibited during June 2005, at Miami Beach City Hall
for "At Home," a show curated by Claire Breukel, of Art Center/South
Florida.
